Cog-zio's Tidbits
Apple Motorsports/TPC Racing Rolex 24 News
By Derek Meluzio
I had a chance to visit the Apple Motorsports shop the other day and even had lunch with team owner/driver Gary Stewart. After the get-together I realized that this "small team from little old York, PA" is not one to be taken lightly. They are in fact a very serious team with high hopes. Last year at the 24 they ran on the lead lap up front in the GT class for the first few hours before being taken out along with the Flying Lizard team in the now infamous Mae Van Wijk accident.
The team will be at the January test days with two 996 based GT3 Cup Porsches. They will then enter the Rolex 24 with one car and a rather solid driver line-up. The reason for two cars at the test days is to optimize seat time for all the drivers, then concentrate 100% on a one car effort for the race. The team feels, along with many other teams, that the 996 based GT3 Cup car is the way to go for the Rolex 24. The newer wider 997 may not cut through the air as well on the highbanks and for now, the very proven reliable 996 is their weapon of choice. To even further maximize their drivers seat time the team also has recently tested at Summit Point raceway. The team will field the car with the help of TPC-Racing. TPC will supply some pit equipment and set up advice along with sharing technical data. For the test days and for the race the team will have a very solid driver line-up with both veteran leadership and young enthusiasm. Leading the way will be hotshoe Tony Ave. Ave will split time at the test days with another DP team but will be full time with the the Apple boys for the 24. The other experienced driver will be former Rolex 24 class winner Gary Stewart. Stewart has numerous starts under his belt and even won the GTT class a few years back with Les Delano, Kyle McIntyre, and Andy Petery. Filling out the line-up will be a number of very familar faces to Stewart. Dave Stewart, Rob Stewart, and Bob Gilbert will also take turns behind the wheel. All three of them are related to Gary by blood or marriage. This tight knit group of relatives along with Tony Ave should form a rather potent driving force. In fact, Dave Stewart, Rob Stewart, and Bob Gilbert are not to be taken lightly. All three competed in the race last year with Gary and have experience in Porsche racecars and countless laps in Spec Racer Ford racing. |
Tying the whole team together is the team manager Mike Goss. After spending just a few minutes with Goss I quickly got the impression of just how professional he was and how professional the team is. This will be his 3rd Rolex 24 with the team and after the dissappointment of last year they are ready to make a run at the podium in the 2006 Rolex 24.
