Randy Berry (GTPstarter)

Dad took my brother and I to the Bloomsburg fair grounds back in the late 60's to see what I think was USAC Sprints. At the same time we would also go to the Clearfield County fair grounds and watch the local boy's run followed up by The Joey Chitwood Thrill show. Back then it wasn't the grand-kids or his children running the show , it was the "old man" himself. Started to lose the racing bug for cars once I got my first dirt bike (Suzuki 250) in the late 70's. Played and rode with bikes until the early 80's when a friend asked me if I would like to go along to the Pocono's to see the Battle of the Twins and the SuperBike Series. Never had been to the Long pond track up until then. What a race, they used the front straight, the south infield, part of the back straight, and the north infield then re-entered the front straight at the point that the pit-in is located. Need I say more!! The Road Racing Bug was born. That was in 84/85. The next year was the year that the Glen was reopened to spectators. The same friend and I made the trip to see the NEW YORK 500 Sportscar race. OH MY GOD, now this was racing !!! GTP's , GTP Lites, GTO's , and GTU's plus it was either the Kelley American Challenge or the Firehawk series all in one weekend. This became our annual pilgrimage to the racing GODS.

In 91 we invited the corner workers that were working the braking area at the end of the back straight to join us for supper. And through the conversation I asked how they got hooked up with the track. One of the guy's had an application with him so I filled it out and was asked to attend a training weekend the following spring. That was in 92 and ever since then I've been a flagger. In the spring of 2000 I received a phone call from the Chief of Speciality of Start Finish for the track and was asked if I would like to join their dedicated group of people. DUUHHHH !!!! YOU BET I WOULD ......

To be part of a group that has been hand picked was and will be one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me as far as racing is concerned. In the fall of 2002 I was asked to help create, teach and maintain a group of flaggers in the fine art of Blue-Flagging while still working the S/F bridge. It makes for a busy summer but the time spent outweighs any problems that can happen. The people that I've met along the way, workers, drivers, fans, photographers, crew, etc. have got to be some of the nicest people that I would ever want to meet. And there' s plenty more to come.
