Tommy's Notebook
No More Mr. Nice Duck…

By Tommy Brolsma

Since I started this website, I've always tried to just focus on the positives, tell the good stories about Grand American (because there are so many to tell), and be a safe haven for Grand American fans to come and talk about our series. When I started the site, I was also an ALMS fan, but preferred Grand American. But a lot has changed in the 2 years since.

I'm tired of people beating the same, moronic drum against Grand American. I was back then, and have about hit my limit a few weeks ago after reading some fuming article on a car website that thinks it's so extreme. I as a fellow webmaster, I usually hold back a bit about talking about other websites, but I can’t let this go.

This car website that thinks it's so extreme continually blasts the France family and Grand American at will, and seems to have some conspiracy theory that they are just out to get Don Panoz and the ALMS. But all they are doing anymore is just using strong language and almost a "shock jock" mentality to get readers. It's like the traffic jam driving by a wreck on the other side of the highway. Everyone wants to see the mess, but drives on and forgets it 10 minutes later because they've seen it a hundred times now.

I don't understand what people have against Grand American, other than it being a smart, fair, and "economical" form of top level Motorsports that is showing other series how it should be done. People complained about the car count, and that's been fixed. People complained about the GT cars being faster than the DP's, and between more development of the DP and the brilliant new GT rules, that's taken care of. People complain that no one is watching the series, but why is it that Grand American is one of SPEED's top rated programs, and live attendance is growing each year? Can we say selective vision?

Grand American is being built the way NASCAR was built…with the philosophy "If you build it, they will come." They are building a quality series with great racing, personalities, and race tracks, and more people come out every year to see what the hype is about.

The "non-traditional fan sports car fan" is what this series is all about, as Grand American realized that there aren't enough "traditional sports car" fans left to really build a series. Heck, looking at the ALMS, there's soon not going to be enough traditional sports car owners or manufacturers to sustain a series.

Do you know why I think people like to throw stones at Grand American now? Jealousy. As Grand American fans, we were called apologists, told that the philosophy would not work told that the cars are ugly (I'll give you the Multimatic on that one…), etc. As a Cog, I haven't been called an apologist in a long time, as we have NOTHING to apologize for. We are fans of a great series who is interested in giving the fans a quality product, and the entrants a good, fair race at a fair price. And other fans are jealous of that. But they will never admit it.

Look for more site news coming very soon…I'm working on lots of stuff behind the scenes. You might even see me write more again, after I get the new stuff debuted. Oh yeah, new stuff. There's a lot of that in Grand American, and there will be lots of that around here, too. I'm pumped about next year, as there will be plenty for you to read and view again.

Until then, thanks for reading, and keep coming back to the Grand American site that is by the fans, for the fans!

(BTW, the title is a quote from cheesy 80's movie Howard the Duck, in case you were wondering…)
